One of our favorite parts of the job as winemakers is looking back at older vintages. Remembering the individual seasons through what’s in the glass is always an exciting experience. We can also see the common threads of the vineyard fingerprints when we taste several years together. There’s a sense of place that doesn’t change with the weather, and it helps us fine-tune our understanding of how our properties show their best. In a way, we can make future winemaking decisions through past results.
We recently tasted through a number of library vintages in our cellar and found a particular three-year run that was showing beautifully. This library offer of Moon Select Chardonnay is the rarest of all Flowers. We only make (on average) around 100 cases from this tiny block on the estate. Pristine Chardonnay that hasn’t been touched since it was bottled is a rare treat indeed, and we have three exceptional vintages in a row for your cellar.
Rich straw hue. Complex aromas of chamomile, honeysuckle and clementine with distinctive notes of minerality and hints of lemon biscuit. An expressive palate suggests lemon oil, coastal salinity and macadamia nut, and the lengthy finish is driven by cool-climate acidity. A true expression of both the grape and its proximity to the Pacific Ocean.
Bright straw hue. The nose is captivating with layers of Asian pear, lemon grass, white pepper and lemon zest. The palate is broad with juicy citrus and hints of flint and almond oil with a finish that is long and memorable. The coastal minerality and bright acidity of this wine express Flowers’ distinct style and proximity to the Pacific Ocean.
In 2016, three blocks were standout performers and represent the core of the 2016 vintage: Block 8 at Sea View Ridge with its full, fruit-forward nature, Block 11 at Camp Meeting Ridge, where meter-by-meter plantings provide intense concentration and structure, and Block 2 at Camp Meeting Ridge, with it’s beautiful mid-palate texture. The resulting wine has aromas of chamomile and lemongrass accompanied with flavors of ripe stone fruits, dried apricot, starfruit and Meyer lemon. Subtle notes of custard and caramel along with a balanced acidity will develop gracefully for many years to come.
