A ruby-red hue of medium intensity gives way to a fading crimson at the rim of the glass. The nose is nuanced and surprising with layers of black cherry, spicy blood orange, hibiscus, cedar, forest floor and crushed stones. These elements carry over to the palate accompanied by clove, cardamom and nutmeg. Textured by fine-grained, whole-cluster tannins, the mouthfeel carries verve, precision and structure from the cool-climate, coastal acidity.

2012 began with beautiful days and cool nights before the first winter storm moved on shore later in the month. Consistent rainfall from winter through late April helped firmly establish the cover crop and replenish vital nutrients to the soil. May was a beautiful month of sunny days that lead to a healthy, vibrant canopy. One final rainfall occurred over Memorial Day weekend but then gave way to stable and reliable weather for the entirety of bloom in early June. We gained a firm idea of the fantastic fruit set by the third week of June, which was welcome news after the previous two challenging vintages. The remaining summer months were consistently warm and clear leading to the start of harvest on August 31st. The long growing season contributed to an excellent concentration of flavors. The dry and consistently warm temperatures allowed us to make pick decisions that were optimal in every case and to complete harvest in a deliberate and measured manner.

Sourced entirely from our Organic and Biodynamically farmed Camp Meeting Ridge Estate Vineyard. Given the extremes of this site, including elevations of 1,150 to 1,400 feet, each small block ripens at its own pace. Close proximity to the cool Pacific Ocean and well-drained soils allows the Estate to produce Pinot Noir with exceptional complexity, depth, minerality, and natural acidity.

All fruit (80% de-stemmed, 20% whole cluster) was hand-picked and rigorously hand sorted prior to going directly into small open-top fermenters. A cold soak at 50 degrees for 8 days prior to native fermentation and followed by an extended average maceration period of 25 days. The cap was kept moist by daily gentle punchdowns by hand. Free-run wine was drained and cellared in 100% French oak, 20% new, for 16 months. Unfined and unfiltered before bottling.

Restrained in alcohol, this extreme Sonoma Coast Pinot delivers plenty of flavor, along the lines of funky, earthy licorice and whole-cluster cardamom spice, supported along the way by a pomegranate note. Zingy acidity is present, along with a low imprint of oak.
