The Sonoma Coast
The Region
Flowers Vineyard & Winery is located in a tiny corner of the Sonoma Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA), approximately twelve miles north of the small coastal town of Jenner. The three estate vineyards and winery sit atop ridges, between 1150 and 1875 feet in elevation, running parallel to and less than two miles from the Pacific Ocean. We consider this area the True Sonoma Coast.
The surrounding landscape has been greatly determined by the famous San Andreas rift, a fault line which is, undoubtedly, responsible for much of the region’s geologic movement over the past few million years. Adding to this geologic design are the effects of wind and water that have further etched and exposed the steep, narrow ridges defining the area. Volcanic deposits are apparent and river activities are evident. All these factors provide for excellent soil conditions in which to grow world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The distinguishing climatic characteristic of the area is the temperate climate with seasonal extremes. During the growing season, the abundance of sunshine on the ridgetops is moderated by the fog and cooler temperatures of the valleys and coastline below. These conditions create a long, slow growing season that produces wines with deep color, ripe flavors, fine tannins and crisp acidity.
During vine dormancy, the winter weather is wet and windy with annual average rainfall between 80 and 100 inches. This abundant precipitation that fills the reservoirs is both a blessing and a necessity as little ground water exists due to exceptional drainage.
Neighboring vineyards include: Hirsch, Marcassin, Bohan, Charles, Helenthal, Nobles, Blue Slide, Failla, and Pahlmeyer.
